Frequently Asked Questions

What is force-free training?
Force-free training uses positive reinforcement only — no fear, pain, or physical corrections. Instead of punishing mistakes, we identify what a dog already does well and reward it, building confidence and trust rather than just compliance. [Read more on our blog →]
Do you use shock collars?
A shock collar teaches through pain or discomfort: the dog does something, feels a shock, and (ideally, from the trainer's perspective) stops doing it. But dogs don't always connect the shock to the specific behavior the way we intend. Just as often, they associate the pain with whatever else was happening around them — another dog, a person, a sound, a location — which is how shock collar use frequently creates new fears and aggression instead of resolving the original problem.
Why don't we use punishment techniques?
Punishment (shock collars, prong/choke collars, physical corrections, intimidation) suppresses unwanted behavior without teaching a dog what to do instead — and it doesn't address why the behavior is happening in the first place. It's linked to increased fear and aggression, suppressed warning signals (a dog punished for growling doesn't stop feeling threatened, it just stops warning you), and damaged trust between dog and owner. Force-free training builds the behaviors you want by rewarding what a dog already does well, creating results that hold up because the dog is choosing them — not avoiding pain.
