Positive psychology encourages us to identify and build on existing strengths. In dog training, this means noticing what a dog already does well and what the specialties of their breed—focus, curiosity, calmness, playfulness—and using those traits as the foundation for learning.
When training highlights success rather than mistakes, dogs gain confidence. Confident dogs are:
More resilient in new environments
Less reactive under stress
More willing to try, explore, and learn
Confidence isn’t just a personality trait—it’s something we can build.
